Salang Sayang / Zaid's Place
It's been said that the people that run a place of lodging actually make or break that lodging. And in the case of Salang Sayang, the former is definitely true; Salang Sayang staff here is warm-hearted Malaysia hospitality personified.
Lovely sea view as far as the eye can see
I've read a couple of reviews that were less than rosy about Salang Sayang, but I'm guessing this was aimed at former staff, because our entire group got the best service anyone can wish for.
For example, we were always greeted with a smile or a nod, whenever we passed through the restaurant or other Salang Sayang common area. It seems everyone at Salang Sayang goes out of his or her way to make guests happy.
Salang Sayang's Family Room
Even when it turned out our air-con wasn't working up to par, a simple ping to the person on duty was all that was needed to have someone fix the unit. No issues with it after that.
And when we'd decided to go on a snorkeling excursion, everything, including the boat, the snorkeling equipment, even the refreshments, all of it was arranged by Salang Sayang after we'd asked Pisa if this could be done.
By the way, I recommend you remember the name Pisa, because she's an absolute gem.
Boek de veerboot naar Tioman
Vanaf Mersing, Nov Vanaf Tanjung Gemok, Oct - Nov [Tanjung Gemok = Teluk Gading] Ga je naar het dorpje Mukut of het dorpje Juara? Klik hier.
Sure, the rooms are not the newest in Tioman and probably could do with a bit of a spruce up. But if it's a basic but clean chalet that you're after, then Salang Sayang fits the bill perfectly.
And bonus points for the seaview that the chalets offer. Stunning vistas of a clear blue sea. You'll think you're dreaming. Salang Sayang has it. By the way, we had three rooms altogether, one of which was a Family Room.
And speaking of beach, it's noteworthy to state that of all the resorts in Salang Village, only Salang Sayang has its very own stretch of beach. And what a beach! It's a picture right out of a glossy holiday brochure. White sand, water as clear as gin and swaying coconut trees peppered here and there.
By the way, if you want to go for a morning stroll from your room to the beach, then it'll be a short 15 second stroll, because the beach is that close to the chalets. Salang Sayang gets top marks for location.
Now, for those interested in the wildlife, there's plenty of it around Salang Sayang, including coral reefs, lots of colourful fishes and shellfish of various kinds. On land, you may come across monkeys, a monitor lizard or a flying fox, or, yes, a peckish sandfly or a mozzie, every now and again. Tioman is a tropical island after all. But so long as you're forewarned (read: bring repellent) no worries.
Oh, the monkeys around Salang Sayang may look cute, but better not leave your stuff unattended, because these rascals are inquisitive, cheeky and quick on their feet.
All told, Salang Sayang is our holiday home away from home. Paradise by the beach, on a budget.
Tip: Since Salang Sayang is very popular amongst Singaporean travelers and scuba dive aficionados, especially, I advise booking early, particularly if you're thinking of coming to Salang Sayang in June, July or August. In other words, best book in advance. Or call (+6)0137400318.
